Today was our last day for Skating. I can't believe how much everyone has improved in just a few short weeks! Awesome job, everyone!

Learning how to add and subtract can be tricky! Right now, we're deep into focusing on facts to 12. I love a hands-on activity, so this week, we made our own Math Smart Bracelets. Students got to create their bracelet with a pipe cleaner and 12 beads. They then used the beads on the bracelet to create adding and subtracting facts for 12. For example, 7 + 5 = 12 and 12 - 7 = 5. We made a whole list of Facts of 12! Lately, in our reading, when we've encountered a word with an 'ed' ending, some of the children have not been sure how to read it. They may read the base word and leave the 'ed' off, skip the word altogether or look at me with confusion. So, this week we had a simple little lesson on the 3 sounds that 'ed' can make and a follow-up whole group activity.
Alex was on the evening news last night! You can check it out here... Another great day of skating at the Grant Harvey Center! Most definitely our most in-depth art project to date has been our Olympic Art project. At the time that we took this project on, Olympic ski-jumping was on all of our televisions. Hence, the ski-jump Olympic art. I have to say, even though it was intense, the students put a great deal of effort into this project and they turned out wonderfully! Let us know what you think... Tuesday...a VERY BUSY day!! Due to the storm on Friday and school being cancelled, we had our Valentine's Day celebration on Tuesday AND Tuesday was also Day 100! Phew! A lot to do, but we got through it :) We started out the day with our Day 100 celebration. Of course, we had some Day 100 centers among other things: 1. Q-Tip painting-students had to paint 10 sets of 10 dots with Q-Tips 2. 100 Words-students had to build (and record) as many words as they could with the letters in the words 'one hundred' 3. 100 Cups-students had to work together to build a structure with 100 cups 4. Roll the Dice to 100-students had to predict and then determine how many rolls of the dice it took to get to 100 on a 100 chart Can you guess which center was the most popular?? We exchanged Valentine's. Then, we took a few minutes to look through the special Valentine's we got from our classmates before having a little Valentine's snack with our lunch. Thank you to all parents who sent in items for our Valentine snack! Everyone was super excited!! :) After lunch was my favorite part of the day...100th Day Art! I LOVE doing this project with the students every year :) Earlier in the morning, students wrote a Bucket List of 5 things they would like to accomplish before they turned 100 years old. For Art, they had to create what they thought they might look like when they are 100 years old...hilarious!! This post is a tad late, but better late than never, right?? One of the culminating activities to our Mo Willems author study was writing our very own Mo Willems books. Students could choose to: --pick one of Mo Willems books and re-write the story in their own words or --pick some Mo Willems characters and make up their own story. Either way, they turned out great!! Some of the best writing we've gotten so far, I think! Today was our first day of Skating and I have to say that the children were awesome! Everyone tried their hardest to skate as best they could and to stay skating for as long as they could. By the time we get to the last skating session, everyone will be pros! I just saw this News broadcast about our Skype session with CHAT this week... |
