Going to the Farm was my all-time favorite field trip EVER! It was awesome and so much fun! The children were all really well behaved and everyone had such a wonderful time. If you ever get a chance to visit Schutten's Holsteins in Maugerville, you definitely should go! It's worth every second! Thank you so much to Wanda Schutten and her family for hosting us for the morning! Thank you also to Dr. Maloney (Mrs. Maloney's Dad) for all the interesting information on cows! He's a large animal veterinarian and knows all about cows! We started out by going into the barn and looking at all the different cows they have. We got to see one that was off by herself because she's about to have her baby! We saw calves and young cows and dry cows and milking cows. We also got to see our adopted calf, Tru! She is still as adorable as she was when she visited us here at the school!
We also saw their milking robot called Levy and the milk room where all the milk is stored before it gets picked up by the milk truck. Farmer Wanda was also gracious enough to make up signs that described the different cows and processes so we could keep everything straight. After our barn visit, we went outside to the barnyard and played some really fun yard games like: parachute, soccer (with a really large ball), egg and spoon races and grain sack races. Then, we enjoyed a snack given to us by Farmer Wanda and her family: chocolate milk, yogurt, homemade cookies and bananas. Yum! At the end, everyone was treated to a contest of "Milk the Teacher"-teachers had to stand on all fours on 2 bales of straw with a roll of toilet tissue tied to their midsections. On go, another adult quickly unrolled the toilet tissue as fast as they could. The first person to 'milk the cow' the fastest, won! It was a spectacular day! Don't forget to ask your child all about it! |
