We couldn't stand the thought of wasting the beautiful day yesterday inside, so we took our work outside! We read to a friend, wrote about nature, built word wall words with pebbles, had a snack, watched the NMES Grand Prix, wrote adding and subtracting story problems, listened to Mrs. Smith read to us and played addition 7-Up! It was a busy day, as usual, but definitely a fun one!!

A couple of days ago, we noticed the tell-tale J shapes that some of the caterpillars were beginning to make. This tells us that the chrysalis process is starting. Now, we have some completely formed chrysalis'. Not all caterpillars are finished or have even started the process yet, though. We predict that in about 7-10 days, we'll start seeing some Painted Lady butterflies! Today, we tried for the first time what I like to call a Boggle Battle. Students were given a Boggle board (on the smartboard) and they had 5 minutes to create as many words as they could with those letters. I was very impressed!! It's amazing what a little friendly competition can do to bring out our very best effort!
Congratulations to Austin and Olivia for coming up with the most words...28 each!! Super job, Everyone! We have our very own hungry caterpillars in our classroom right now and they are HUGE! We've predicted that they should be starting their chrysalis' any day now! At least we hope so because they are getting pretty big for these small containers! We recently completed an absolutely beautiful art project...Stained Glass Butterflies. They are displayed in our classroom windows right now and really add a lot of color and beauty! We started with a piece of wax paper and used watered-down glue to paste small pieces of multi-colored tissue paper to the wax paper. Once that dried, we glued our pre-cut butterflies onto the tissue paper collage and trimmed the edges. When the sun hits them, they really light up the room with color! Once we actually get more than just a few minutes of sunlight shining through our windows, we will take more pictures and add them here. Some little friends arrived Wednesday afternoon and on Thursday, we got to meet them...tiny little caterpillars. Here's what they looked like on Day 1... These tiny little caterpillars will eat and eat and eat and grow and grow and grow until they are ready to build a chrysalis and start turning into butterflies. As you can see by what they look like on Day 6, they will grow A LOT! We've been discussing the life cycle of a butterfly a lot over the last few days. Ask your child to tell you all about how it happens...oh, and stay tuned for a sneak peek at our Butterfly Journals!
Last week was an exciting week here for us in Grade One...we planted some seeds and were introduced to some friends who will be staying with us for the next 4 weeks or so...read on to find out all about it! :) It all started when we read the book called Splat the Cat Oopsie-Daisy. That Splat inspires us to always do the most amazing things! We spent the week learning all about the life cycle of a plant, what plants needs to grow and how they go from a little tiny seed to a beautiful plant or flower. We even learned about measuring length (using non-standard units of measurement like paper clips and blocks). We got to measure different things in our classroom using a Splat cut-out and then we wrote about our findings. We also got to illustrate our very own non-fiction book...all about plants. All the students can't wait to bring it home to share it with you! To finish off our planting unit, we all got to plant some seeds...marigolds! Measuring with Splat... Writing about what we found when we measured... Illustrating a non-fiction book about Plants... And in all the excitement, I completely forgot to take pictures while we were planting, however, I did snap a few this morning (5 days after planting) and look what we have...little marigolds!! Very exciting!! At least one seed in every single pot came up...I think that's the first time that's ever happened for me in all my years of planting :) Stay tuned to hear about our little friends...
I once again have a new favorite art project! These baby birds are soooo adorable and we've received so many compliments on them from passersby in the hallway! They were all done with pastel. Aren't they striking on the black background?? The pictures really don't do them enough justice. Thanks to everyone who sent in the circular materials we used to trace the different sizes of circles! Wow! Is the time ever going by fast! I've once again found myself behind on my blog posts...so bear with me as I try to catch up :) We've now finished up our Numbers to 100 math unit. As a final celebration, we took some time to experiment with place value...building numbers to 100 with base 10 materials. If you're not familiar with Base 10 Blocks, the little cubes are worth 1, the rods are worth 10 and the flats are worth 100. Can you guess which numbers we built?
