For the past couple of weeks, we've been working on 'How-To' writing. How-To writing is when we teach others how to do something. Our first piece of How-To writing was definitely a fun one and one in which everyone may do differently-How to eat an Oreo cookie. Check out our first attempt at How-To writing and let us know how you eat an Oreo cookie in the comments section below :) Today, we completed yet another beautiful art masterpiece...tulips. This piece of art required a few different steps: 1. Draw 2 or 3 tulips (including the blossoms, stems and leaves) with a pencil 2. Trace over all pencil marks with a black sharpie 3. Using watercolor paints, paint the tulips and background They turned out amazingly! It's now getting really hard to pick my favorite piece of art work from this year...there are just too many! For the past couple of weeks, we've been working on some art we like to call April Showers Bring May Flowers. Ask your child to explain to you how they completed these pieces of art. They did such a great job!! April is Dental Health Month and we've been discussing and learning all about our teeth and how to properly care for them. Here are just a few of my favorite activities: One of my favorite books to read, that has a combination of fiction and non-fiction, is What If You Had Animal Teeth...it's a great read! After reading this book and lots of discussion, we completed a great literacy connection. Students had to choose which animal teeth they would want to replace their own front teeth and then write about it. After that, they got to create themselves with those very same teeth...fun! Check them out...which teeth would you want? This morning, we had a special guest speaker...a dental hygienist. Mrs. McKnight showed us an x-ray picture of a set of teeth and we talked about why and how we lose our baby teeth and why we need to continue to brush, floss and care for our teeth every day. Ask your child one thing they learned from Mrs. McKnight today. After discussing with Mrs. McKnight why it's so important to floss our teeth, we went back to our classroom and wrote about it. We also got to do a very fun craft connection about flossing our teeth. Check it out... In our study of numbers to 100, we tried our hand at assembling hundreds chart puzzles today. Each student was given their own hundreds chart that was pre-cut into multiple pieces. The goal was to assemble the puzzle correctly and then glue it back together. Also, we've been talking a lot this week about teeth and proper care of our teeth. Stay tuned for 'teeth' posts... For the past two days, we have been having a wonderful time celebrating Easter through 16 different centers. 8 on Tuesday and 8 again today. We took lots of pictures, so let us know what you think! Here's what we did on Tuesday: 1. Sight Word Egg Hunt-students had to search for the hidden eggs in the classroom and record the sight work on each egg 2. Crack the Egg-each plastic egg contained three numbers that formed a Fact Family. Students had to record the whole Fact Family 3. Spring Word Ladders-using written clues, students had to guess the missing word on each rung of the ladder in order to climb to the top 4. Peep Peep-a Math game that had students practicing ordering numbers to 100 from greatest to least 5. Easter Foam Shapes-create an Easter scene with the foam shapes 6. Order Up!-another math game that focused on ordering numbers to 100 from least to greatest, this time (we need lots of practice with ordering numbers!) 7. Scrabble Math-students were given scrabble tiles and had to build words with the tiles. Once a word was built, they had to create and record the addition sentence using the numbers each letter was worth. Those who could build words with the letters q, z, x got more points! 8. Cracking Some Sums-a math game that practiced adding 3 small numbers together (1-6) and then adding 10 to it to get a total. The person who got a complete line first wins the game! Here are the Easter centers we completed today: 1. Easter Craft-I purchased little foam Easter kits a while back and students had to follow the picture to put the pieces together correctly...they loved it!! 2. Easter Scene-finished the Easter Scenes so we can write about them next week 3. Scrambled Easter Eggs-inside each plastic Easter egg, there were mixed up letter tiles. Using the word wall, students had to unscramble the tiles to make a sight word and record it on their recording sheet 4. Compound Easter Eggs-students had to match the words to make compound words and record them 5. Easter iPad Apps 6. Easter games on the Surface- http://www.primarygames.com/holidays/easter/games.php 7. Listening to Reading on the Netbooks-students listened to the wonderful story by Jan Brett called The Easter Egg 8. More Math practice with ordering numbers to 100 from least to greatest Just an FYI that there are new skip counting videos on the Math page. We made them yesterday :)
Today, we did 2 very interesting things! The first, we practiced counting in a variety of ways (by 2s, 5s and 10s) and made some videos and took some pictures. Check out our pictures below...the videos will come tomorrow, so stay tuned! Second, we started our Expository Writing unit (How-To Writing) with the very popular topic...How To Eat An Oreo Cookie. Ask your child to tell you all about the process we took this morning and who our special audience will be for this particular piece of writing. |
