We have now started our next math unit on Numbers to 20. We began with counting both forwards and backwards, starting and stopping at various points. You can find out more about this math unit on our Math Page of this website. Check out some videos we took today of us practicing this important skill...

This week is Safe Schools week, so each day we will be discussing some aspect of Staying Safe. Today it was Bus Safety. We started by reading about ways to be safe on the school bus and then we watched some interesting videos of how to be safe on the bus. We wrote out some bus safety rules (look for these to come home tomorrow). Then, we got to practice our learning by participating in a real bus evacuation. Don't forget to ask your child to tell you some ways they can safe on the bus. Check us out during the bus evacuation... Last Thursday, we also took some time to do another Think Outside the Box. Students were given a half moon shape and asked to create it into anything their imaginations could think up. Their creativity was endless! Check out just some of the awesome ideas they came up with... It's been VERY busy the past few days and we're a little behind in our posts so we'll try and catch up a little now. Last Thursday was Terry Fox Walk Day and NMES participated in this worthy cause. We began with a short assembly in the gym where we discussed who Terry Fox is and why he is a hero. Then we headed outside to walk around the block. It was a beautiful day to participate in this beautiful cause! We also learned a new Word Work game today called Build a Flower. You can ask your child how it's played...we all got several chances to play it together today. We had a very nice Read to Someone session today (1 part of our Daily 5). Before the session began, we reviewed the 3 ways to read a book (read the pictures, read the words and retell the story) and how to sit EEKK (elbow to elbow, knee to knee). Then, we practiced it by reading to a friend for 8 whole minutes! We're building our reading stamina! Yesterday, we tried another art project with Mrs. Lynch's class. This time we used fall leaves and paint. The goal of the project was to take a fall leaf, hold it to a piece of paper and sponge paint around the outside of the leaf so that when you lifted the leaf, you saw a nice white leaf print. Many turned out quite nice, others may have forgotten the goal of the project, but they are all masterpieces in their own right! Check them out... In case you missed it, here's the video we made to share with parents at Meet the Teacher night. Enjoy! Check out the Movie Trailer we made with some of our Dot Day pictures and video clips. International Dot Day was Sunday, September 15 so we celebrated it today and it was a packed day! It is based on Perter H Reynold's classic book, The Dot. The Dot is a wonderful book that discusses the joys of creativity and leaving our own mark on the world. Here's what we did... We started out by watching the book The Dot on Tumblebooks. After that, we discussed what 'Being Creative' means and made this anchor chart. We wrote about 'Being Creative' in our journals. I love our 'dot' periods at the end of each sentence... Then we created our own Autumn Dot trees... Then we really put our thinking/imagination caps on. What could we make this black dot into? We created a Dot Tree with dots we designed to tell All About Us. We created Dot Patterns... And played Dot Games... And even read a book about the number Zero and what his mark on the world is. Then, it was time for Learning Buddies and we got started on a Dot Collage with them, however, you'll have to stay tuned for finished products because they're not quite masterpieces yet. And last but not least, Mrs. Green read us a book called A Bad Case of the Tattle Tongue and guess what the main character got on his tongue every time he tattled on someone? Purple dots! WOW!! That's a lot of dots for one day!
