Today during Math centers, when given a chance to explore with Cuisenaire rods (a manipulative used to measure length), this is what some of the children decided to create...bet you can't guess who created what... :)

Yesterday, we had a guest speaker from the SPCA come in and speak with us about Pet Awareness and what the SPCA does for animals in need. She began by telling us a story about a dog named Sam. Ask your child to tell you all about the story and what happens to Sam, the dog. After the story was finished, she had a special surprise for us...three 6-week old kittens! They were soooo sweet! The children absolutely fell in love with them... Now that we have just about finished our math unit on Measurement, I thought it was about time for us to learn how to tell time. When some of the children begin asking, "Mrs. Smith, what time is it?"...they're ready. To begin our unit on Telling Time, we got together and talked about all the things we already know about time. Check out our list...it was A LOT bigger than I thought it might be! We have some smart cookies in this class! We know that: -There are 60 seconds in 1 minute. -There are 60 minutes in 1 hour. -The short hand is called the hour hand. -The long hand is called the minute hand. -The red hand is called the seconds hand. -Seconds are faster than minutes or hours. -On a digital clock, after 59 comes 00. -In the morning, we eat breakfast. -At noon, we eat lunch. -In the evening, we eat supper. -At night, we sleep. -12:00 can be both noon and midnight. -a.m. is the morning. -p.m. is after noon. As you've probably already heard, we had a special visitor in our classroom yesterday. As one of the special finales of our Pet Awareness unit, I brought in my dog, Heidi, so we could practice our good Pet Awareness skills. She was a huge success and everyone in the entire school wanted to spend some time with her! Hopefully your child has already told you lots of stories about having Heidi in our classroom for the day. She participated in many of our daily activities including art. While I didn't always have my camera to take pictures, I did manage to get a few. We also were able to get a couple of special blog posts written by Hannah and Ava. Stay tuned for a special Heidi video that I'm working on and will post soon... Hide is such a cuty. I love her. Evreon LOVES her. She is onle nine years old. She has a bed. She has a lesh and she has a woter dish. She even gits to go for walks. By Hannah
Hide is rely cute. I am having a good time with her. I think she is lerning a lot too. By Ava This week, in preparation for our soon-to-be butterflies, we've been learning all about the life cycle of a butterfly. What better way to learn that than through a writing/art project? Each of the students did an absolutely amazing job this morning creating their rendition of the life-cycle of a butterfly... Today during Math, we discussed ordering lengths and played an activity called Snakes Alive! Students were asked to create 3 different snakes of different lengths out of play-do. They then had to order them with their table-mates from longest to shortest. Here are 4 pictures showing the 4 finished products... And then, we discussed what a 'baseline' is and the importance of having a baseline when measuring length. Then, we went back and made a few adjustments shown in these pictures... I think they've got it! Don't you? :)
